First layout in Pietermaritzburg
I moved to Pietermaritzburg in April 2015 to start get married after having been divorced for more than 2 and a half years. When moving to Pietermaritzburg, all my model railway equipment was boxed up. I was keen to build a layout, but space in my new home was limited. The garage was the only option. There was however some drawbacks to this option. There was a supposed to be window, but the contractor who changed half of the double garage into a flatlet claimed that he ran out of money and did not install a window, but only burglar bars, leaving a rather large opening in the wall. I also had to share the garage with my mother in law's car. Yet, I was keen to build a layout and opted to build a layout that hinged from the wall and could thus be raised via a pulley system to make room for the car. I had endless troubles with the pulley system. I completed the trackwork and started on some scenery when I realised it takes me about two hours to safely pack away my locomotives and rolling stock after operating the layout. A better option had to be found.
